Creepy movie. A gruesome psychological thriller, set on a backdrop of vivid colors and expansive sets in the midwest. Matthew Goode, the smart "bad" guy from the Watchmen, plays a perfect nutjob. I didn't find the rest of the characters to be that compelling, and I got a little bored in and out of the movie. It wasn't bad, but it's definitely not a rewatch.
Initially I wasn't really drawn into this movie to the point that I couldn't stay interested past the first 10 minutes. In a way I never got drawn in. It is entertaining for the beautiful sets and color, but the rest of it didn't feel memorable, and the violence just came off as gratuitous to me. The plot moved, but felt scattered and Matthew Goode and Nicole kidman were not enough to make it work for me, good as they both were.
Worth a watch for the set designs and the music (Clint Mansell and Phillip Glass).
The same director made Oldboy and Snowpiercer, which I found to be far superior in both script and design.
